Sector: Business

The Australian Embassy and Market Development Facility (MDF) recently visited the Metinaro Pig Breeding Center (MPBC) to explore the farm and the artificial insemination (AI) laboratory.

Australia’s MDF and MPBC are teaming up to introduce AI services for pig farming. This partnership aims to boost the pig population, provide improved breed pigs, and support smallholder farmers on their recovery journey. AI technology is introducing a new era of pig breeding, enhancing piglet quality, and reducing disease risks. MPBC, led by Dr Alipio de Almeida, is pioneering commercial AI services for pigs in Timor-Leste, having served over 100 farmers nationwide since 2022. The centre also serves as a research facility for Animal Health students from Universidade Naçional de Timor Lorosa’e (UNTL). As part of the visit, the team also visited Kios Lasama, an agri-input shop owned by Adelia da Silva Boavida. Dr Alipio is training Adelia on biosecurity and pig farming best practices.
This collaboration goes beyond innovation; it’s about empowering farmers, improving livelihoods, and building resilience.
